Separation anxiety is a common behavioral problem faced by cats. Normally people have a mindset that anxiety issues are common for dogs only and fail to understand the depth of issue when happens to kitties. It is a known attribute of cat’s nature that they are quite independent and lazy and don’t care about their parents homecoming timings. But this is not authentic to say for all feline friends. Some might not really care about the on goings in the house while some might get too attached.   • Vocalize(cry, moan) while you are on your way out
  • Tightly grasping or holding on to you or hiding while you leave for work.
  • The cat may also defecate or urinate outside the litter box or on the bedding.
  • Anxious eating habits when alone
  • Vomiting in absence of the pet-owner

Separation anxiety is a behavioral issue, so treatments are available. Consulting a vet before starting with any medication or treatment is advisable. Some possible ways that you can get your cat used to your absence are:

1. Avoid the triggering factors: Have you ever thought on how does your cat get to know you are about to leave? Simple answer by your actions while you leave the house like picking up the keys, tying shoes, rushing all over the place etc. To avoid the cat thinking that these are the key points of daily separation, do these activities at other times of the day as well. This will not trigger the cat again as an act of leaving.

2. Avoid contact prior to leaving the house: Make it a habit to avoid your cat for at least 10-15mins before leaving for work and after you arrive home. This will ruin the interest of the kitty of arrival and departure and it won’t excite her anymore and will ignore it.





3. Make your feline friend busy with games and puzzles: Brainteasers are always a time pass for anyone. There are various available games and puzzles for pets in the market that will more likely keep them busy throughout the day and they won’t even feel your absence.

4. Entertain the kitten: Entertainment has always been the prime way of relaxation and cutting time. Cats are lazy creatures and they would love to lie down whole day and listen to soft music or watch cat-friendly videos.
